The Breakdown: 2011 AFC Wildcard Colts and Jets
January 6th 2011 14:56
The Colts and Jets will play in a rematch of last year's championship game. The Colts have been ravaged by injuries, leaving them weak in several key positions. The Colts also had a very disappointing season, which is due to the injuries to key players like Melvin Bullitt, Bob Sanders, Austin Collie, Dallas Clark, Mike Hart, and Jerraud Powers. None of those quality players will be playing in this playoff matchup.
Kelvin Hayden isn't fully healthy, but he and Antoine Bethea are all the Colts have in pass protection. Hayden is prone to getting burned and expect the burning to be higher than usual. What makes Hayden a useful player is his ability to get interceptions and return them for TDs. Jacob Lacey and Aaron Francisco are huge question marks for the Colts' defense. I am not a big fan of Mark Sanchez, but he has too many weapons to fail at his easy task.
Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, and Dustin Keller should be able to run the Colts' secondary ragged. Indy's run defense relies on Gary Brackett to make plays. He will have to make them against Shonn Greene, who is Mr. Playoffs. He has a good chance of getting the better of the battle against players like Muir- who is nicked up a little.
I think that Clint Session- even if not at full strength- should be able to impede Cotchery's progress. Besides, Pat Angerer will give him tons of help as the team's LOLB. Robert Mathis should be kept relatively quiet, but I think Freeney can force some pressure against this tough Jets O-Line. This will lead to various mistakes being made by mistake-prone sophmore Mark Sanchez. This could lead to some ugly picks that benefit Hayden and others.
The Colts are lucky that the Jets pass rush isn't at full strength without Shaun Ellis. Heck, they're lucky that the Jets don't have a pass rush right now and didn't have a consistent one anyway. Peyton Manning is tough to sack, and the only person that might even cause him a problem is Bart Scott. Jacob Tamme should have a solid day, and Reggie Wayne is healthier than Darrelle Revis.
The Jets corners are good, but if Garcon can break away; it will be his signature. Garcon doesn't make too many catches, but he is a legit deep threat that makes high yardage returns. Wayne is talented but so is Revis. That will be a very interesting matchup to watch. Joseph Addai might actually do something, but he probably won't because he stinks. Seriously. I think this game is tough to predict, but I think that the Colts secondary is so far behind. Before breaking this down, I was with the Colts. Now I'm against them.
