Rule Changes
August 14th 2012 15:31
Its not even here but already talking even more football, nothing about players or teams. There have been rule changes in the NFL over the past few years, things such as moving the kickoff line up and no longer having a forceout (still don't understand either), and now the NCAA has followed.
They have also moved the kickoff line up to the 35 yard line trying to limit returns and therefore limiting injuries from big collisions. There were still plenty of returns in the NFL when they did this, but what the NCAA also did was also change where you put the ball on a touchback (now at the 25). This was even more necessary because most college kickers still don't have the leg strength; now there will be less initiative to go for returns.
All of the changes have been made for player safety; they may be able to limit the injuries but not by much, it is a contact sport after all. The other rule change deals with players losing their helmets. Now they have to sit out 1 play. I'm not sure how I feel about this rule; it will make sense when a big hit causes a helmet to fly off, but there are other times where it's not so much.
Player safety is obviously very important and a big issue so anything the NCAA and NFL can do to help protect them is positive. As long as the games aren't changed and we still have actual football it's not a big deal to me. I still want to see big hits, and maybe we will see even more in college because players can get others out for a play by dislodging their helmet.
