3/2011 NFL Mock Draft: 1-5

March 16th 2011 15:23
This Mock Draft assumes that there are no trades involved.

1. Carolina Panthers CB Patrick Peterson

Patrick Peterson is a special player who is the best draft prospect. He has an impact on special teams with his blazing speed, and he is a complete corner that can step right in and perform at a high level. Peterson gets picks, and he can also shut down opposing receivers. With Chris Gamble getting older and uncertainty surrounding Richard Marshall's contract, the Panthers take Peterson.

2. Denver Broncos DT Nick Fairley

The Broncos desperately need a big guy in the middle that can disrupt plays in the backfield. That guy will be Fairley.

3. Buffalo Bills DE Da'Quan Bowers

The Bills really need a pass rusher, and Bowers had the most sacks in all of college football last year. The Clemson standout is also a stout run defender at the end position, and the Bills were horrible against the run last season. Bowers will fill a ton of needs for Buffalo.

4. Cincinnati Bengals WR AJ Green

Terrell Owens was horrible last year and his contract is up anyway. Chad Ochocinco isn't happy with the team, like Palmer, and his contract runs up after this season. Jordan Shipley is the only good receiver, but he needs help. Shipley is a slot receiver, and not the kind of game-breaker like Green. He gets downfield, and he is really special. Green is a complete prospect that fits the Bengals' system. He will bring an influx of talent into a sagging Cincinnati franchise that is poorly owned.

5. Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert

The Cardinals are definitely not going to stick with the same guys they had last year at quarterback. Derek Anderson and Max Hall are two of the worst at the position. If there was no lockout, the best choice for Arizona would be to acquire a veteran quarterback. Instead, they will have to fill their need at the biggest position in the draft. Gabbert is the only QB I would be able to comfortably start in year one. He is a refined passer that is athletic, boasts a strong arm, and has better accuracy than his statistics indicate. As always when analyzing draft prospects, stats must be ran over by bulls at Pamplona.
