4/2011 Team Scope: Denver Nuggets

April 9th 2011 13:02
The reason why the Nuggets are playing at an extremely high rate after the Melo trade is the emergence of role players that now have more touches. There is also less uncertainty surrounding the future of the best player on the team which in turn effected the other players on the team. Denver also has a nice all-around roster that is quick on the outside and strong in the interior.

Ty Lawson epitomizes a quick point guard, and he is also a solid shooter that is at his best in transition; a staple in George Karl's offense. The only knock on Lawson is his defense, but Raymond Felton and the interior have that important portion of the game covered. Felton and Lawson form a solid point guard duo. Felton is a good defensive player because of his quickness and fast hands, and he is also superb in transition. However, he is a subpar shooter that is terrible at long 2's.

Shooting guard Arron Afflalo is a solid, fundamental player that plays decent defense. Afflalo is the team's best shooter, and that's where his value mainly is at. J.R. Smith is Denver's best scorer, but he has a really bad shot selection. He'll take 3-point fadeaways while he is double-teamed, and that's what kills him. He is athletic enough to be a really good defensive player, but like many others, he doesn't care about defense.

Danilo Gallinari would be a great shooter if he had a better shot selection. He's a terrible rebounder, but he does play decent D due to his athleticism. Gallinari has a lot of talent, and the whole world is waiting for him to put it all together. Wilson Chandler is very athletic, and he was misused in New York as a shooting guard at times. Chandler can score, and he's now in a much more comfortable role in Denver.

Kenyon Martin is an incredible defensive player that is a nightmare to face when he is on the top of his game. K-Mart's strength allows him to throw down some powerful dunks. His power is what he relies on on the offensive end. Al Harrington is another one of those players that could be an effective scorer if he stopped taking so many crazy shots.

Nene is easily one of the best interior defensive players in the league. He and Martin are an extremely fearsome duo down-low. Nene is also arguably the quickest center in the league, and that allows him to rack up steals. Birdman has a huge highlight reel of blocks who is also a decent rebounder, but he is poor on the offensive end. Timofey Mozgov was the smallest name in the Melo deal. Mozgov is a good rebounder, but he fouls far too much and always turns the ball over. The high TO rate translates to him being a liability on offense. Kosta Koufos is a solid offensive player with his moves around the rim, but he can't defend at all because he is too soft on the inside.

I think the Nuggets are a good basketball team that will really present a tough challenge to the Thunder if that is who they face in the first round of the playoffs. They are a well-rounded team that plays efficient basketball, and the point guards are really running the offense well in transition. Afflalo has broken out since the All-Star Break.

I think the Nuggets are a fun team to watch. I'm a UNC fan and got to enjoy 3 years each of Felton and Lawson. It is good to see them handling the transition to the NBA well. It's hard to get value for a superstar, but I think the Nuggets did as good as they could with Melo and at least got something.

If the Nuggets do face the Thunder in the playoffs, who do you think guards Durant, Gallinari, Martin or someone else?

Hey man! Thanks for dropping by! Yeah, when I first broke down the trade I thought the Nuggets did get some nice value which is tough to get these days when dealing superstars. Martin isn't really going to guard Durant because he'll try and force Martin outside. Gallinari isn't talented enough to guard him alone. I would combine them and switch and rotate. Martin and Nene will take care of him when he drives, and Gallinari will close him off on the wings. It is so difficult to stop Durant though. He's always going to get his points. All they can do is make sure that they can make him less efficient and force him to take more shots than usual to get his points.

I like the Nuggets chances against the Thunder, though Oklahoma City is looking really good.

That sounds like a plan to me. I agree with the idea of going into the game and knowing Durant is going to get his. If this is how things shake out, it should make for an interesting series for sure!
