2/2011 Scouting Report: DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin

DeSean Jackson
If Kolb started, the flamboyant receiver's numbers would not be as great. Kolb is the typical West Coast Offense QB; he throw's short and accurate passes. D-Jax is a speed demon that relies on hauling in a long ball or two to change the pace of the game. Vick loves throwing it to Jackson downfield. Jackson is drop-prone, he is a horrible route runner, he offers nothing blocking-wise, and he never plays the in the slot. Ever. The Eagles want him to, but he is too scared of an injury- can't blame him too much for that.
His flamboyant antics show his immaturity, and he screws his team over with dumb plays. Remember that Broncos game in his rookie year? I sure do. But when you put all that aside, you get somebody who is very good at the one thing he does do- go deep. Big-play players that change games are important in this league. He is overrated by those who think he is a top ten receiver. DeSean Jackson is a physical specimen that is a good player, even with his flaws. I say he is overrated because it's fans that overrated players. Rarely is it the case that the player himself is poor. It's fan perception.
Jeremy Maclin
If Kolb was the starter- which would mean the Eagles maintain the West Coast Offense- Maclin would be the one with big numbers. He is also a fast player that plays the deep ball well, but he is more versatile and can play the short catching game as well. If the Eagles did use a WCO, it would be Maclin with the big numbers and talk. Instead, he is a safety net in the Vick-run Vertical offense that favors Jackson. Vick really loves giving it to D-Jax.
Maclin is a far better route runner as well as a better pass catcher than his teammate. I am one of the people that argues that Jeremy Maclin is better than DeSean Jackson. I would personally love to see Maclin on the Patriots. He can play the short yardage game, but he can also go deep and give Brady something more to work with on deep plays.
