2011 Breakdown: AFC Divisional Jets and Patriots
January 12th 2011 15:58
It's another New York-Boston rivalry folks. Is it 45-3 again? I don't think so. But I do think that this is a game that the New England Patriots will take. Shonn Greene and LT should be able to destroy a terrible Patriots' interior. Their defensive tackles are not healthy. The backups are awful. Nick Mangold will destroy anybody who comes up the middle. It will be very easy for him to go up the second level and continue to block Greene or LT.
I think Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes are strong up the middle, especially Mayo. They won't allow any big gains by the Jets, but expect the Jets to have success running the football. Mayo should be able to slow down Dustin Keller, but Keller should be a factor in this game. The Pats know how to destroy the poor Mark Sanchez. Devin McCourty should be able to play some nice pass D, but the Jets receivers should get some nice separation; especially Holmes or Edwards. The problem for the Jets is that Sanchez can't give it to anybody deep, even if they are wide open.
Vince Wilfork and Gerard Warren are good players, but D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Damien Woody will make them a lot less influential in this game. The Jets have no pass rushers at all, so this will be business as usual for the best offensive line in the NFL. The Pats are a solid running team, so the Jets can't play as many DBs as they did against the Colts.
However, the Jets have a strong running game so this game will be won on the arm of Tom Brady. He spreads the ball around as good as any quarterback in this league, and his short precision passes make him very effective in this league. Gronkowski and Welker should cause confusion between the Jets' LBs. I think that one of them has a huge game.
The Jets have solid corners, and Brodney Pool is a solid safety. However, Pool struggles in coverage against good QBs, and fellow safety Eric Smith is a liability. I think that the Patriots are able to win in a game that isn't as high scoring as people want it to be.
Prediction: 24 Patriots 20 Jets MVP: Tom Brady
