Cleveland Sports Needs To Win A Championship Soon
June 19th 2009 19:30
Another failed season with the Cleveland Cavaleirs not getting to the NBA Finals and winning it. It wasn't good enough to get to the Eastern Conference Finals and then get hit with a knock out punch with Orlando shooting 3s at an extreme rate and even worse making them with accuracy. So much went wrong with the series. Of course being on the cover of Sports Illustrated isn't exactly a great thing. Can't that stuff wait until at the very end for Cleveland teams? Maybe there are two titles that can fit either: Self-Destruction or The Jinx.
It isn't just the Cavs but also the Indians and Browns. The Browns haven't done anything in a long time and this version has been pitiful and pathetic up to this point. Who knows about the next season. The Indians have come close in 2007 but choked. It doesn't matter if they were within one game of the World Series. If you don't make it, it isn't good enough.
Why Cleveland Needs To End The Major Sports Drought
Sure, there have been championships won such as the Cleveland Crunch and Cleveland City Stars but those are smaller leagues. Only those who have followed those leagues would have a greater clue as to how good they were. The Crunch won in 1994, 1996, and 1999 in a league that was called the NPSL (National Professional Soccer League). It was an indoor soccer league but of course it is gone probably due to the Economy. The Cleveland City Stars won in the USL 2nd Division, a minor soccer league. They were promoted to USL 1st Division but it would be the second group below MLS.
Winning the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, or Stanley Cup would be like winning one of the majors in the PGA Tour as they get the most publicity. For Cleveland, they cannot win the Stanley Cup due to no NHL team but one of the other three would work just fine. At this point, it doesn't matter who does it.
